Preparing for a Shoot

May 29, 2015

Head-shot

. Go to bed early the night before the shoot.  Sleeping too late will cause black circles under your eyes.

. Don't drink water or other liquids after 10pm the night before the shoot.  It will cause your eye lids to be very puffy.

.  Apply lip balm for a few days prior to the shoot.  This will make your lips look fuller and moist.

. Wash and dry your hair before the shoot.

. Bring a few changes of clothes.  Include one white, one black, and one other solid color top.  Keep the style simple.

. Don't wear too much jewelry.

. If you need professional make-up and hair styling, you need to do this before the shoot.  I can arrange for a make-up artist to come to shooting site 30-60 minutes prior to the shoot, if desired.  You would pay the artist directly. If you want to do make-up yourself. please make sure face and neck use same color shade foundation.

. I will take some pre-shots first to examine your features.  Feel free let me know which is your "favorite" side to be photographed from.

. Bring some of your favorite clothes.  Make sure include some white and black colored clothes.  Don't forget to bring some jewelry too.

Family portrait

. Get plenty of rest the night before your shoot.  You don't want to end up looking like a family of pandas.

. Don't go to the shoot with an empty stomach.  You will get impatient when you are hungry.

. Don't drink water or other liquids after 10pm the night before the shoot.  It will cause your eye lids to be very puffy.

. (Ladies) Keep makeup simple and elegant.  Family portraits are about the whole family.  You don't want draw all the attention onto you.  Make sure face and neck use same shade foundation too

. Clothing plays a huge part in creating a successful portrait.  Solid colors are an absolute must. Prints distract the eye and draw attention away from everything else in the image.

. Make sure everyone brings some matching color (or similar color) clothing.  If everybody is wearing white, and only one person is wearing blue or red, then she or he is the only thing can be seen.

. AVOID PATTERNS: Solid colors are the way to go.

. If your family has small children, best to book a morning session or take a nap before going to shoot.

Babies and Newborns

. Decide who will be in the shoot.  If parents will be in the pictures, please don't wear too bright colored clothes.  Black and white will be your best choice.

(Your inclination may be to avoid being in the photos, but we encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to be photographed with your baby, even though you may not be feeling at your best.  In years to come, you and your child will be glad to have these early photos, and you'll want to include your spouse or partner, too.  The best ones also include siblings.)

. Feed baby half an hour before the shoot.  And change them into a clean diaper.  Make sure the little one is happy and comfortable.  I have an area heat lamp that can help keep baby warm.

. If you have a special outfit in mind for your baby's first photo shoot, pick it and pack it in your hospital bag now!  You might want to bring a couple of options in case one doesn't fit well.  Focus on outfits with special meaning.  If you don't have anything in mind, don't worry.  Your baby will look great without clothes or just wrapped in a blanket.
